Rapid sequence intubation considerations for the obese patient.

  • Succinylcholine: TOTAL body weight
  • Rocuronium: IDEAL body weight
  • Etomidate TOTAL body weight
  • Ketamine: IDEAL body weight
  • Benzodiazepines: TOTAL body weight
  • Propofol: IDEAL body weight

Note: meds that start with vowel use TOTAL (actual) body weight, except for succinylcholine. This is why it “succs“

Other considerations

  • use a Mac 4
  • use ideal body weight (maybe more) for lowered lung volumes in obese patients
