RULE 1 Scheme: Someone does something (CD) to someone (CI) in English, changes to To someone something I do
This is the formula: Subject + verb + CD + CI
If it is a person or pet, use ‘a’
- Esperar a alguien
- if someone (alguien) a boy, Lo espero
- girl, La espero
Spanish example:
- I said something to you. (Te lo digo.)
- To someone something I do was the Spanish formula for this English sentence
- Using Rule 3, down below, omit the pronoun
- Te lo digo
- Se la dimos
- X la abrazo (hug her)
RULE 2: CD + CI(usually a person) + VERB
RULE 3: Sometimes you don’t need both CD+CI. But CD always has a gender (even though they are THINGS–in Spanish, all things & people has a gender–but CI never has a gender.
For example: “I hug Dani,” or “I see Dani” etc. You only have one complement (object) here. Use CD = gender.
- la abrazo (no need to use se)
Mnemonic: CD (direct object, direct complement), imagine a compact disc (CD), which is a thing.
RULE 4: If you have Le, and Lo/La next to each other, you cannot have both “L’s”, you must substitute Le into “Se” which is the CI
